AI just went human mode

Yesterday, OpenAI showed off its big dick again.

During a showcase led by CTO Mira Murati, we were introduced to its latest flagship model, the GPT-4o.

The O stands for omni, which is Latin for ‘all,’ because 4o accepts everything as an input: text, audio, image, and video.

It’s also the most human AI ever.

Check out this video of two 4o’s conversing. It’s nuts:

Eyes and mouth: You can now have voice conversations with ChatGPT. And it seems like it responds dynamically to the emotion in your voice. Also, it sees; snap a picture to discuss landmarks, plan meals, or solve math problems.

Super speed: It can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, compared to GPT-3.5’s 2.8 seconds and GPT-4’s 5.4 seconds. It processes all inputs with a single neural network, enhancing efficiency, and is 50% cheaper and 2x faster than GPT-4 Turbo.

Elephant memory: According to a NIAN benchmark, GPT-4o has made significant strides in memory with achieving near-perfect results.

✦Self-awareness✦

The announcement and its implications quickly drew comparisons to the 2013 film Her, directed by Spike Jonze. In fact, it seems like the voice they demoed is modeled after Scarlett Johanssen in the film.

CEO Sam Altman knows what we’re thinking. He sent out this equally obvious and cryptic tweet:

Here’s what smart, anonymous, and scared people on Hacker News have to say:

THE KING NEEDS YOU

Human, you are a mere . Do you not seek grander ventures? A greater title? Honor? Take up arms, and help me expand my kingdom!

✦Business & Tech✦

Google is rolling out "AI Overviews" in search results, using AI to provide summaries and enhance searches. This was one of countless announcements made at Google I/O 2024. Here’s a list of everything announced.

Memes bring life: AMC raised $250 million by selling 72.5 million shares at an average of $3.45 each amid the revived meme stock craze sparked by meme prophet Roaring Kitty. AMC shares soared 78% to $5.19 on Monday and jumped another 32% on Tuesday.

Klarna reports that nearly 9 out of 10 employees now use generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Non-technical teams lead in usage, significantly aiding tasks in communications, marketing, and legal. Klarna's AI adoption boosts efficiency and profitability.

Cringe: Bumble apologized for ads mocking celibacy, following backlash for shaming personal choices. The company is removing the ads, donating to support organizations, and offering ad space to them. Lol.

Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO, received a 60% pay increase to $34.2 million due to soaring AI-driven demand. Nvidia’s revenue tripled, and its market value surpassed $2 trillion. CFO Colette Kress's compensation rose 22% to $13.3 million. Median employee pay increased 17%.

✦Fashion & Culture✦

Bye: Supreme might be leaving VF Corporation soon. Despite Supreme’s global expansion, its cool factor has declined. So, WWD reports VF is seeking buyers for the luxury streetwear brand, acquired for $1.2 billion in 2020.

Steve Buscemi, 66, was punched in the face in Manhattan, causing bruising and swelling. He was hospitalized but is now okay. The NYPD is investigating, with no arrests made. His co-star Michael Stuhlbarg was also recently attacked.

Burberry reported a decline in fiscal 2024 profit to £383 million, down from £634 million, amid slowing luxury demand. Revenue fell to £2.97 billion. Despite underperforming expectations, CEO Jonathan Akeroyd highlighted progress in brand refocus and operational improvements.

Cool: Ann Pizzorusso, a geologist and Renaissance art historian, believes she has identified the landscape behind Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa as Lecco, near Lake Como. She matched features like the Azzone Visconti bridge, the Alps, and Lake Garlate to those in the painting, supporting her theory with geological evidence.

✦Hmm… Interesting✦

For sale: This avant-garde Malibu house, designed by Ed Niles, features a butterfly wing-shaped roof and six interconnected zones with unique personalities. Set on a 4-acre lot, it includes five bedrooms, an infinity pool, and stunning views.

Can Gucci survive by being quiet?

Right now, Sabato De Sarno is the name on everyone's lips.

Not only did his predecessor Alessandro Michele create a golden age for Gucci during his 2015-2022 tenure - Gucci is also doing financially bad right now.

So, De Sarno has faced his fair share of criticism and pressure.

On paper, everything checks out; the luxury pendulum has swung away from maximalist prints and opulence, and into a “quiet luxury” era, which De Sarno is great at.

But consumer spending is suppressed, so getting proper feedback on what works is hard.

Yet, his latest London collection revealed three defining aspects of his character that might turn him into a hero.

Sabato does not give a fuck: His collection completely soars above the critiques he's received and he’s doubling down on his style.

Sabato is an optimist: After the show, he was glowing - despite the growing grumbles around him.

Sabato is kinda cool: His show was a tribute to London, acknowledging the city's support for him and the inspiration it offered Gucci’s founder, Guccio Gucci, a century ago.

The collection featured a mix of bold, contrasting elements: bras under poplin shirts, flowery white lace under tough black leather - a classic London City hodge podge.

The show, swathed in greenery, symbolized the duality of man and nature, perhaps hinting at a deeper metaphor within his work.

Anyway, here’s 4 good looks:

THE DEPTHS

Nice find

Diver thought he found a corpse, but he found something cooler.

In 1972, Stefano Mariottini, an engineer from Rome, was snorkeling on the coast of Monasterace near Riace. Just enjoying himself.

All was chill, until he saw a hand sticking out of the sand of the sea floor. He started digging with his hands. A corpse. No, two corpses.

Mariottini quickly alerted the local police. These people were probably missing.

And they were, for 2500 years. From the depths of the Ionian Sea emerged two magnificent bronze statues, later identified as the "Warriors of Riace" - Greek statues, dating back to the 5th century BC.

The masterpieces, known as Warrior A and Warrior B, stand over 6 feet tall and are believed to represent two warriors, possibly heroes or gods.

Warrior A exudes youthful vigor, characterized by his robust build and intense expression.

Warrior B, slightly older, presents a more serene and composed demeanor.

Unfortunately, their weapons and armor have withered away. Here’s how they’re thought to have looked:

Their detailed features, including intricate beards and expressive eyes, reveal the extraordinary skill of ancient Greek sculptors.

This is important, because most Greek bronze statues were melted down over the centuries. But these, we have. And it's all thanks to a chill snorkeling sesh.

All the way? Smart human.
